The full day of free family fun activities are aimed at teaching participants about the Barnegat Bay and the role each person can play in protecting it, according to Barnegat Bay Partnership Events Coordinator Betsy Hyle.

“People who come there walk away with a better appreciation of how precious the Barnegat Bay is, that it is this amazing natural resource that is in trouble and that there are lots of things we can do to save it.”

Hyle says there will be lots of interactive activities where young children can participate. “At the beach we’re going to be having seining and crabbing, you can go kayaking or paddle boarding, there’s an eco-tour in the morning that goes down through the Dillon’s Creek in Island Heights, then we also have a fishing clinic.”

Hyle says while Superstorm Sandy is not the main topic of the Festival, many of their partnership organizations will be addressing the storm to help give people a better understanding about what happened and what the future might hold. The Rutgers Master Gardener Program will also be there to talk about how to set up a storm-sturdy yard and about the impact of salt water on yards.

Hyle says she hopes people go away with a love for the Barnegat Bay and a desire to do everything they can to help it and make sure it’s there for the future.

The Barnegat Bay Festival takes place Sunday June 2nd rain or shine. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wanamaker Complex in Island Heights. Free Shuttle service will be provided from an off-site lot. Get more information from the website at http://bbp.ocean.edu or call 732-914-8109
