BARNEGAT – A driver trapped in a burning car in the township is rescued by two daring police officers on patrol.

Authorities say that Mario Dischiavi, 57, was incapacitated inside the blazing 2005 BMW 745i on Biscayne Road when Officers Lauren Keilitz and Michael DiBlasi responded to an alert resident’s call. Police say the door latch was stuck, leaving officers with no way to reach DiSchiavi.

DiBlasi fetched a window punch from their patrol car and smashed the driver’s side glass. Keilitz then overcame withering smoke and flames and pulled DiSchiavi from the wreckage.

He was treated for smoke inhalation at Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin. Investigators are now trying to trace the cause and source of the fire.
