Monday was a great day to play a round of golf and that’s what 124 people did for the benefit of the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore at Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson.

The annual outing was a smashing success helping raise more than $100,000 to help fund programs for the more than 11,000 girls between the ages of 5-17 served by the local council. This year’s event also honored New Jersey Natural Gas, a longtime partner and supporter of the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore.

I had the pleasure (I guess you would call it that) to serve as Master of Ceremonies for the post-golf dinner. As they have for many years George Campbell of Investors Bank and Nina Anuario of OceanFirst Bank served as co-chairs of the golf committee with Senator Jennifer Beck lending her support as honorary chairperson. An incredibly well-run event proceeds will be used to help provide financial resources to any girl who wants to become a Girl Scout while maintaining facilities and providing training for the 6,000 adult volunteers that are a part of the local council.

Not only was Monday a good day to play golf it was also a good day for football in the summer. The 36th Annual Phil Simms North-South All-Star Classic was played in ideal conditions last night at Kean University and with the help of 17 recent graduates from Shore Conference schools the South prevailed 23-21.

Jackson Memorial’s Matt Castronouva, who is headed to Monmouth University, returned the second half kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown.

It seems for the last couple of years at least it’s been Toms River and Jackson battling it out in the District 18 Little League Tournament, the first step on the road to Williamsport. Last summer it was Toms River prevailing which began a magical run that lasted all the way into August in Bristol, Connecticut.

However things might be different this time around as last night visiting Jackson improved to 3-0 in the round robin portion of the tournament with a 15-2 victory over Toms River at their Mapletree Road complex. Jackson has won its three games by a combined score of 49-2.
