A Great Weekend In Happy Valley

A little of this and a little of that as I battle to get my voice back after a wild weekend at Penn State in which I saw my beloved Nittany Lions outlast Michigan in a four overtime thriller before more than 107,000 fans in what was the ultimate white-out.

It was the single most exciting game I have ever watched at Beaver Stadium and it resulted in a post-game love fest during which many fans stayed as nobody wanted the good feeling to come to an end.  I know to most I’m blowing this way out of proportion and I probably am but it was something I’ll never forget and the best part was I got to enjoy it with my son and daughter as well as my brother and 5-year old nephew.

Among those at the game was Toms River‘s Sam Stellatella, the kicker on Penn State’s 1959 Liberty Bowl winning team and an active member of the Lettermen’s Club.  He called Saturday’s game among the most exciting he’s ever witnessed and Sam has seen quite a few.

Getting a close-up look at all the action was Southern Regional’s Mike Gesicki who was on the sidelines with many other recruits.  Gesicki made his final recruiting visit along with his family and Ram teammates Logan Sheehan and Bailey Bellisimo and I ran into the entourage the following day doing some shopping in a downtown store.

The 6’6 receiver will make his college choice known on Friday and it will be either Penn State or Ohio State and here’s hoping this past weekend was the clincher.

The Toms River North Girls Soccer team avenged last month’s loss by blanking Toms River South 3-0 Monday night and handing the Indians their first loss of the season.  Shannon Groffie scored a pair of goals for the Mariners, who have now won 8 in-a-row.

Nick Catania

On a much more serious note our thoughts and prayers go out to Point Pleasant Beach Boys basketball Coach Nick Catania, who suffered an apparent heart attack yesterday and as of last report was in the intensive care unit at Riverview Medical Center.  The 36-year old Catania is a physical education teacher at Middletown High School South and was participating in an in-service at Tindall Park when he collapsed.

It’s likely that the work of fellow teachers and the district’s nursing staffs where what kept him alive until he was taken to the hospital.  Catania led the Garnett Gulls to their first-ever Group 1 championship last winter as well as the Class B Central title.
