It was a very good weekend for businesses along the Jersey Shore as the dreadful spring weather gave way to five consecutive sunny days before Monday’s clouds and rain.  Clearly people could not wait to head to the beach and warm weather sent them flocking to the shore which gave many businesses a badly-needed shot in the arm.

Of course many were unprepared for the fact that it was quite cool on the beach both Saturday and especially Sunday due to the combination of cold water and a strong wind from the south.  There was as much as a 20-degree difference in the temperature on the beach and just a few miles inland but all-in-all it was a good holiday weekend despite yesterday’s gloomy conditions.

Unfortunately many towns had to cancel planned Memorial Day celebrations and observations but organizers in Beachwood went ahead with their plans and were rewarded with a break in the weather.  The borough was able to hold its annual parade and remembrance ceremony and many local residents came out to watch and salute those made the ultimate sacrifice.

I’m sure many of you over the weekend heard the story about the gorilla that was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo to protect a 3-year old boy who had fallen into the animal’s enclosure.  It was a very sad story and zoo officials defended their actions by saying there was no other choice but to protect the life of the child.

As you would expect animal rights activists are up in arms and while the death of the 17-year old gorilla is tragic I think most rational people would admit that had the boy been killed the story would be much worse.  The issue of who is to blame for the incident is a separate matter but saving the boy was and should have been the priority.

The high school baseball season has reached the state sectional semifinal round with Toms River South, Brick and Manchester the only Ocean County teams still alive and all playing on the road today.
