The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of New Jersey as accumulating snow and wintry mix is expected.

Another weekend ends, and another winter storm approaches. This one is going to be a "mostly miss" for New Jersey - the very heavy snow totals are expected to occur well north of us. However, a prolonged period of wintry mix and snow will still cause some accumulations of ice and snow through Tuesday morning.

Winter Weather Advisory

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Sunday night through Monday night. A Winter Weather Advisory calls light accumulations of snow, sleet, and/or freezing rain. Hazardous travel due to slippery roads and limited visibilities will be possible during the peak of the storm.

Counties included in the Advisory include: Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, and Union.

Timing

One of the big problems with this storm is how prolonged the precipitation is expected to last. We could see at least light snow, wintry mix, and/or rain somewhere in New Jersey from Sunday afternoon all the way until Tuesday morning. Even very light snow would accumulate after 36 hours.

Sunday afternoon and evening, the first bands of showers will arrive. Given the temperature forecast for today (40 to 50 degrees), this is likely to be mostly rain. During the nighttime hours (from about 10pm to 7am), heavier snow and sleet will take over, particularly in colder North Jersey. A wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow will extend into Central Jersey through the overnight hours. For Monday, Everyone will be susceptible to some sort of heavier precipitation (again, likely a mixed bag of precipitation types across the state). Monday night, the system will wrap up with some final snowflakes, again especially to the north.

My best advice, as usual, is to be aware of the current and anticipated weather conditions before embarking to work, school, the store, or otherwise. There is no "danger" from this storm if you just stay home, stay indoors, and stay warm.

Accumulations

So how much snow are we expecting? Unless you live in Sussex, Warren, Morris, and Passaic counties... not much.

Sussex County in particular looks to be right on the edge of the heavier snow band from this system. I think the potential for 3 to 6 inches is there, and I would extend that marginally significant snow total forecast into northern Warren, Morris, and Passic counties as well.

Through the rest of the Advisory area (basically north and west of the NJ Turnpike and north of I-195), you could see 1 to 3 inches of snow on the ground by Tuesday morning. Additional light accumulation of ice is possible here as well. As we all know, it only takes a light glaze of ice to create a really dangerous situation for driving and walking, so vigilance is important.

South of the advisory area, including Monmouth, Ocean, and Burlington counties, a coating to maybe an inch of snow and ice accumulation will be possible.
