A Night of Rumors and Achievement

Its funny how through social media stories can spread and spread very quickly.

As many already know highly-regarded Southern Regional football standout Mike Gesicki has made a verbal commitment to Penn State which does not become official until he signs his letter of intent on February 5th.  The coaching staff that recruited him at Penn State is now gone so Gesicki is rightfully considering his options, among them Ohio State who was the other finalist for the talented 6’6 tight end.

There were reports that Buckeyes football coach Urban Meyer was going to show up last night to see Gesicki during his basketball game at Toms River South and by the time the Rams arrived many in the crowd had heard about the reports and were on the lookout for Meyer.

One man told me he had spotted him and when I said it was not the Ohio State coach he actually argued that I was wrong. Funny stuff.  There was a raucous atmosphere for the game at South and Gesicki, who is an exciting player to watch with his dunks and high-flying antics led the Rams to a come-from-behind three point victory.

By the way Southern is home tomorrow to face St. Augustine and new Penn State football coach James Franklin is expected to be on hand to meet Gesicki and his family.  Mike told me last night he is still committed to PSU but I would imagine even he’ll have a better idea after talking with Franklin.

Cincinnati Reds third baseman Todd Frazier, a 1,000 point scorer during his basketball days at Toms River South was on hand last night to cheer on his alma mater.  Frazier reports to the Reds spring training in Goodyear, Arizona on February 13th and while he’s looking forward to the warm weather is hesitant about leaving his pregnant wife Jackie.  The couple lives in Toms River in the offseason.

Congrats to Point Pleasant Beach senior Matt Farrell who is the 9th member of the school’s 1,000 point club.  The 6’ point guard reached the milestone early in the 2nd quarter of last night’s rout of Asbury Park and he did it with a breakaway dunk, just the second of his career.  Farrell scored all 19 of his points in the first half as the Garnett Gulls improved to 8-0.

Count me among those who have not caught Super Bowl fever because the game is being played in New Jersey.  I’m already tired of reading and hearing stories about security, traffic and weather and the game is still two weeks away.
