The Brick Township Board of Education did not wait long to find a replacement for Bill Bruno as the Athletic Director at Brick Memorial High School and they also didn’t have to search far.

40-year old Ed Sarluca, a Mustang alumnus and teacher at the school was named last night to fill the spot vacated by Bruno beginning October 1st when he moves on to become an assistant director of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.  Sarluca graduated from Brick Memorial in 1993, got his undergraduate degree at Elon University and later his Masters in administration from the University of Scranton.

He has spent the last 17 years as a teacher and coach at the school and since 2006 served as head coach of the Mustang’s basketball team, a position he will have to now give up.  Eddie and his wife Maureen live in Toms River and have four children.

Kudos to the board for moving swiftly and selecting someone who will have the best interests of the school, its athletes and coaches as Sarluca is a true Mustang.  He is also the son of my good friend, the other Ed Sarluca who is a longtime member of the Shore Sports Network and will soon be walking the sidelines with his microphone as we get set for another season of high school football.

A quick follow-up on the segment I did earlier this week on 17-year old Maddie Musselman, a key member of the US Women’s Water Polo team who won the gold medal at the recent World Championships and is the daughter of former Central Regional High School standout and major league pitcher Jeff Musselman.  Maddie yesterday made a verbal commitment to UCLA, accepting a full five-year scholarship although she cannot sign an official letter of intent until November 1st.

It was announced this week that Toms River Fire Company #1, who sponsors the annual Halloween Parade was moving the event back permanently to October 31st which is the holiday itself.  For the past three years the parade was held on the Saturday prior to Halloween which finally allowed trick or treating to take place on October 31st in Toms River and surrounding towns like everywhere else in America.

However parade officials say the move drastically reduced the number of participants and spectators so it’s back to Halloween which this year falls on a Saturday.  Reports also say township officials are not moving trick or treating to the day before the parade which they had done in the past. Like the parade it is scheduled for October 31st
