We woke up this morning to winter. Yes it took until the middle of January but it finally looks like winter outside following a Sunday snowfall that was the first of the season.

The timing was perfect as most schools are closed today and many have the day off as its Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday observing the birthday of the celebrated civil rights leader.   There is talk of a possible East Coast storm next weekend but the extended forecast shows temperatures well above freezing for most of what’s left of January.

We had a nice lunch as we met up with our children in New York City Saturday at a place called Burger and Lobster which has to be a great place to work as a waiter because the only thing on the menu is, you guessed it,  burger lobster. You either order a burger, lobster roll or lobster for $20 or two people can each have a burger and split a lobster for $60.

That’s pretty much it and it was absolutely delicious…my daughter Alex and I each had a burger and split a lobster. The New York City location in the Flatiron district opened just over a year ago with the other locations in England and the Middle East. If the limited menu appeals to you its well worth the trip plus the beer is pretty good.

All the talk surrounding the NFL Playoffs last week was about how all four road teams won their games. Well home field advantage re-surfaced this weekend as all the home teams (higher seeds) prevailed to set the stage for next Sunday’s conference championship games. The visiting Patriots open as a 3-point favorite over the Broncos in Denver in what will likely be the last meaningful Brady vs. Manning matchup. Meanwhile the Panthers are 3-point favorites over the Cardinals in Carolina in what will be the nightcap of the Sunday doubleheader.

For those who have not yet jumped on the bandwagon today presents a great opportunity to see the Monmouth Hawks on the basketball court as they host Siena at 4pm. Monmouth is coming off a sensational win at Iona Friday night and is now tied for first place in the MAAC. Today is only their fourth home game of the season and they’ve sold out two of the first three. For ticket information visit monmouthhawks.com
