You often here the expression “it’s a game of inches” used in sports but rarely when it comes to auto racing yet it was a matter of inches that decided Sunday’s Daytona 500 and coming out on the short end was a Southern Regional High School alumnus.

Martin Truex Jr., who grew up in the Mayetta section of Stafford Township lost NASCAR’s biggest race by one-hundredth of a second to Denny Hamlin, who went from fourth to first on the final lap. The 35-year old Truex is a 1998 Southern graduate who was inducted into the school’s Wall of Fame in 2008. A three-time winner on the Sprint Cup circuit taking the checkered flag at Daytona would clearly have been the highlight of his career.

The top four seeds have advanced to the semifinals of the Shore Conference Boys Basketball Tournament but there was plenty of drama and nail-biting during quarterfinal round at Brookdale Community College. In what will go down as an instant classic Manasquan outlasted defending champion Rumson-Fair Haven 80-77 in triple overtime in what was one of the most exhilarating games I’ve witnessed in many years.

The game had a little bit of everything but in the end the difference was Warriors senior Jack Sheehan who scored 35 points and made numerous clutch shots. Squan will face CBA, an 11-point winner over Lakewood in Tuesday night’s semifinals at the Pine Belt Arena. In the other semi, Toms River North will have home court advantage as they advanced to the final four with a 58-52 win over Long Branch.

The Mariners blew a 17-point lead before rallying in the final four minutes behind juniors Jaden Rhoden & Darrion Carrington who combined for 29 points. North will oppose top-seed Mater Dei Prep, who outlasted Ranney 47-39.

The girl’s semifinals are tonight at the PBA with #1 seed St. John Vianney to face 4th seed St. Rose at 6pm followed by #2 Rumson battling two-time defending champion and 3rd seed Manasquan. Both games will be broadcast live on 1160/1310AM and streamed at shoresportsnetwork.com

No surprise that following a disappointing finish in the South Carolina Republican primary former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has ended his bid for the presidency. It seems like it will only be a matter of time before Ben Carson and John Kasich follow leaving Donald Trump, Marco Rubio & Ted Cruz. We’ll know a lot more in two weeks but it’s shaping up more and more like a Trump versus Hillary battle for the White House.
