Some random notes and thoughts on this first Monday of October:

We all know that we need rain but by now we could use a little sunshine as well.  It seems like we’ve been in this dark and dreary pattern for days and days and hopefully the sun will make an appearance sometime soon.

As a sports fan you enjoy those days and times when your favorite team or teams win and rarely does it seem that I get one like I did on Saturday.  At the time the Mets clinched the first National League Wild Card spot I was handling my duties as the public address announcer for Monmouth University football.  The Hawks were rallying against Fordham and moments after my iPhone told me the Mets had won it was Monmouth who came from behind for a dramatic 42-41 overtime victory, one of the most exciting in school history.

That’s a pretty good day but I got home to see Penn State then come from behind to beat Minnesota in overtime and complete a rare “hat trick” for me.  For this fan it does not get much better.

I know there are many who find the behavior of American golf fans deplorable during the Ryder Cup but I’m not one of them.  Sure I hate the idiots who scream during every tee shot but to be honest the football-like cheering, screaming and chanting that takes place over three days is what makes this team event so different from regular golf tour stops.  Plus I think the players enjoy it just as much.

I’m a little bit late but congratulations to Geralynn Roma, who was recently honored as Beachwood’s Citizen of the Year.  She has done an amazing job running the Beachwood Municipal Alliance for years and is truly deserving of having her name adorn the sign at the intersection of Beachwood Boulevard and Route 166 for the next 12 months.

Best wishes to my Jewish friends celebrating Rosh Hashanah…may this New Year be a joyful, peaceful and happy one.
