A very enjoyable night at Klee’s Bar & Grill in Seaside Heights to benefit Hometown Heroes on Wednesday.

Close to 200 people sampled wine and beer, enjoyed a variety of food and basically just had a good time for a good cause.

For some it was their first visit to the popular tavern since Superstorm Sandy and I met a few people who are still out of their storm-damaged homes and don’t know when they’ll be returning.  As usual the staff at Klee’s did a great job with proceeds from ticket sales benefitting Hometown Heroes, who has helped thousands of local residents the past few months.

Last night I gave Executive Director Jennifer Barna a check for over $4000 which was sent to me by Mary Duke, the town administrator in McClennanville, South Carolina.  You might remember that was the town, WOBM and Ocean County adopted following Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

The fishing village with just 500 residents did not forget that generosity as they previously donated money to other relief efforts in this area before sending another $4000 to Hometown Heroes.  That’s what you call “paying it forward.”

Another record-breaking night in what’s been a record-breaking season for Point Boro basketball standout Kelly Hughes.  She scored 28 points as the Panthers routed Hillside in the NJSIAA Tournament last night and her final point of the night was the 2,535th of her career. That moves Hughes past former Shore Regional standout Patty Delehanty, who held the record since 1978, as the leading scorer in Shore Conference Girls basketball history.

In Boy’s state tournament highlights from Wednesday, Toms River North edged Eastern 57-56 on a Damiem Singleton free throw with 3 seconds left.  It earns the Mariners a trip to top-seed and defending Group 4 champion Atlantic City on Friday night.

The Vikings had to battle their way past upset-minded Southern 61-56 who received an outstanding effort from junior Mike Gesicki, who scored 24 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, blocked 5 shots and wowed the crowd with a pair of acrobatic dunks in the loss.
