Count me among those who have accepted and nominated others as part of the phenomenon known as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

For those who don’t know it goes like this. Somebody challenges you to dump a bucket on ice water on your head through social media, usually Facebook or Twitter. You have 24 hours to accept the challenge or donate $100 to ALS. Many do both. However after you do it and make a video as proof you then challenge three others and they of course hopefully accept and each challenge three of their own.

It actually all started in mid-July and was not tied to ALS, which is also known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” However late last month Pete Frates, a 29-year old former Boston College baseball player stricken with ALS challenged some friends in the Boston area via video and the concept took off like wildfire.

In less than three weeks more than $13 million has been donated to the ALS Association. They received less than $2 million over the same period last night.

It has been a bit of a struggle since the high of the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby for Toms River’s Todd Frazier, who has now been sidelined since last Friday with lower back soreness. The Cincinnati Reds third baseman felt pain after an awkward swing on Thursday in Colorado and sat out the entire weekend.
Frazier has only one home run and 11 RBI’s since the All-Star game and his batting average has dropped 11 points to .279.

Vinny Pedalino’s bases-loaded single in extra innings gave the Toms River Police Department an 11-10 victory over the Ocean County Corrections Department in the first annual “Battle of the Badges” Softball Classic Saturday night at Ken Frank Stadium. TRPD team Captain Ron Bayer, who hit a game-tying 3-run homer in the bottom of the 8th was named MVP while Mike Rooth of the Corrections Department won the pre-game home run derby.

It was all part of a fundraiser for the Toms River South Alumni Association and the fact the game turned out to be so competitive was a bonus. The pre-game ceremony included an appearance by the Toms River Little League team that won the New Jersey State Championship.

By the way because his team lost Warden Ted Hutler has to wear a Toms River Police Department sweatshirt to work for a day.
