Scattered showers and storms on Monday will precede an extended period of heat and humidity.

Rainy Start to the Week

loading...

The transition from weekend to workweek has been pretty wet for parts of New Jersey. In fact, both far northern and far southern New Jersey have experienced over an inch of rain since Sunday evening.

After a band of steady rain exits the Garden State around mid-morning (8 or 9 a.m.), scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast through Monday afternoon. Limited instability will inhibit the strength of these storms, so I don't expect a severe weather day. However, a few heavy downpours and/or a minimally gusty wind or two will be possible.

Rain chances will end abruptly this evening. Aside from an isolated thunderstorm on Tuesday afternoon, New Jersey's weather forecast will remain dry through Thursday morning.

Heat and Humidity

Did you notice the increase in humidity this weekend? And did you notice that temperatures bumped back to around 90° on Sunday? Yeah... summer returns with a vengeance this week. As the title of this blog post suggests, every one of the next seven days could have a 90+ degree temperature somewhere in New Jersey.

Monday's high temperature forecast is a general 84° to 89°. It will be a bit cooler next to the ocean, but a few isolated inland areas could touch 90° this afternoon. It's hard to believe, but today is likely to be the coolest day of the upcoming week.

Tuesday bumps temperatures up a bit - I expect most of the state to peak around the 90-degree mark.

And Wednesday will be the real scorcher of the week, as statewide high temperatures spike into the mid 90s. Humidity will be high... although notably not "oppressive", dew points in the 60s will still add that classic summer stickiness to the air. The heat index ("feels like" or "apparent" temperature) could be as high as 102° on Wednesday - that's hot!

Thursday stays steamy as well. Despite some clouds, highs will still reach the lower 90s for most of the state.

A Break from the Humidity

A cold front is forecast to start pushing into New Jersey late on Thursday. That front will first manifest itself with some showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening. Given the usual heat and humidity, the ingredients will be in place for stronger or severe storms. As the front passes through the state Thursday night, a slightly cooler and much drier air mass will arrive. So our humidity level will drop dramatically for Friday into the weekend, making our weather conditions much more comfortable.

Temperatures won't drop that much behind the front, however. Friday's highs are currently pegged in the 85° to 90° range. And both Saturday and Sunday will likely see high temperatures in the lower 90s for much of the Garden State.

So yes, potentially 7+ days of 90+ degree temperatures somewhere in New Jersey. Happy Summer, everyone!
