Gov. Chris Christie has announced the resignation of David Samson as chairman of the Port Authority. He did so at the start of a news conference at the Statehouse this afternoon, his first since a marathon session Jan. 9 to address the unfolding Bridgegate scandal.
The news conference followed the Thursday release of a report, commissioned by his office, which clears him of any personal involvement in the controversial lane-closings at the George Washington Bridge last September.
An internal Bridgegate report places the blame for the controversial lane closings at the George Washington Bridge and an ensuing coverup entirely on former Port Authority official David Wildstein and former Christie aide Bridget Kelly.
A state of emergency is in effect across New Jersey as freezing rain has coated roads throughout the central and northern portions of the state, interrupted rail service and cut power to more than 60,000 utility customers, a third of them in Mercer County.
The fired Port Authority official who gave the order for the controversial closing of approach lanes to the George Washington Bridge now says Gov. Chris Christie knew about the closings at the time, according to a letter from his attorney.
