2-year-old drowns in Ocean County pool

A 2-year-old child fell into a pool in Berkeley Township on Monday night after wandering away from her home.

The girl's parents reported her missing to police around 8:30 p.m,, prompting a search of the Bittern Lane neighborhood, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronado. Officers found the unidentified girl floating in the shallow end of a neighbor's in-ground pool.

Police administered CPR to the girl in an effort to revive her before taking her to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was pronounced dead at 9:24 p.

Coronado did not say in a news release issued Tuesday if the pool had a fence around it as required by state law. Prosecutor's office spokesman Al Della Fave said that's part of the ongoing investigation by the Prosecutor's Office, Berkeley Township Police and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department.

No charges have yet been filed in the incident.
