Random thoughts on a Monday morning following a weekend in which we dodged a snow and ice bullet that hit much of the surrounding area north and west of us.

I don’t talk too much about the NFL but a comment if I may.  This has been a dreadful season for the Giants and quarterback Eli Manning, who looks like a deer in headlights and has had that same dumb look after each of the 25 interceptions he’s thrown this season including five yesterday.

However, Eli and the Giants have won two Super Bowls in the last seven seasons so at least Big Blue fans have had great moments.  While I expect that Tom Coughlin will return as coach next season I do think there will be a shake-up on his staff and maybe even the front office.

About the only consolation for Giant fans Sunday came if they watched the complete meltdown of the Cowboys, who somehow blew a 26-3 halftime lead at home and lost to the injury-plagued Packers.  As he has so many times in big games late in the season Tony Romo came up small and the agony of team owner Jerry Jones is really something to enjoy.

One other football quickie regarding the infamous Sports Illustrated cover jinx.  The Eagles are the latest to fall victim as Nick Foles was on the cover of the most recent issue and sure enough the birds were crushed in Minnesota yesterday and saw their five-game winning streak end.  Foles did end up with big numbers but threw only his second interception of the season early in the game as Philly fell behind and trailed throughout.

There will be some serious food consumed this morning when players, coaches and guests gather for the annual WOBM Christmas Classic Tipoff Brunch at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Toms River.  The event has become a tradition and the unofficial opener to the tournament which begins this weekend at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.  The guest speaker this morning will be former Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice.

Having had to drive on the Parkway more than usual these past couple of weeks I have sympathy to those of you who commute daily.  The road construction on both sides north of the Toms River toll plaza has resulted in narrower and constantly shifting lanes and you need to be an expert in defensive driving.  I don’t know if accidents have increased in the area but surely near-misses have because I’ve witnessed a few myself.  I can only imagine what it must be like in bad weather.
