Barnegat Police were on high alert when a box-truck containing pressurized oxygen tanks overturned on Route 539. Police said the Penske rental truck left the roadway and damaged a utility poll before flipping over near Route 72 late yesterday morning. The Berkeley Emergency Response Team (BERT) determined that the oxygen tanks were not leaking or compromised. The roadway was closed to all traffic from Route 72 to Route 610 and a safety perimeter was established for several hours to offload the tanks.

Atlantic City Electric was called in repair the damaged utility poll. The initial investigation indicates the snow covered roadway contributed to the accident. The driver, Gustave Demartin, 47, of Old Bridge was uninjured.

Barnegat police were assisted by the Ocean County Sheriff's Department, Stafford Police Department, Barnegat Volunteer Fire Company and Warren Grove Fire Department.
