NEWARK — NJ Transit says the driver of a bus caught on camera going the wrong way on the exit ramps between the Garden State Parkway and Route 440 has been take off the road.

"The operator has been removed from service pending the outcome of our investigation," said NJ Transit spokesman Jim Smith, adding that he is still collecting a salary.

Smith did not identify the driver.

He said the agency's preliminary findings indicate the bus was heading to Smith Street to begin the No. 116 route, scheduled to operate from Perth Amboy to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York.

"Regrettably (the driver) made the wrong turn in the New Brunswick Avenue/Industrial Ave. area. There were no customers on board the bus during this incident," Smith said.

Two separate New Jersey 101.5 audience members noticed the bus parked along the shoulder on a rainy Thursday morning and sent the station photos and video.

"We thank the listeners that brought it to your attention. We encourage our customers and the public whenever they see something like this to report it immediately to NJ Transit so we can launch an immediate investigation," Smith said.

Nancy Snyder, another NJ Transit spokesperson, said that every NJ Transit bus is equipped with a dash cam, but said it doesn't operate continuously.

"It's episodic. A sudden change in torque or movement would trigger it," Snyder said.

She said because there were no sudden movements, it was likely was not triggered.
