If you're between ages 8 and 18, and you care for someone who's older, ailing or disabled - or if you know one - Caregivers of New Jersey Foundation wants to reward one outstanding youth with a gift of $1,000.

The first-ever Caregiver Youth Award highlights not only one deserving young nurturer, but also the difficult task of being, essentially, the head of the household.

Young caregivers often sacrifice their educations, well-being and personal time while devoting their attentions to those needing assistance.

The National Alliance for Caregiving estimates that, nationwide, about 1,300,000 young people meet the challenges of tending others before they're even old enough to vote.

Applications are available at the Caregivers of New Jersey web page. Complete it, and compose an essay that describes your role as a caregiver.
