For the second straight year the girl’s soccer teams from Central and Toms River South met in the South Jersey Group 3 Tournament and on Tuesday the visiting Golden Eagles got the revenge they had been seeking after losing to the Indians in the sectional final last November.

Amanda Carolan scored less than two minutes into the game and added another goal as Central jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead and then held on for a nail-biting 3-2 semifinal victory which sends them into Friday’s sectional final at Moorestown.  After falling behind early TR South clearly had the better of the play for the remainder of the game as they outshot Central 23-10 but freshman goalie Noah Smith was able secure the victory and move the Golden Eagles within a win of their first-ever sectional title.

Tuesday’s game featured two of the shore’s top forwards with the career of one coming to an end.  Carolan’s two goals give her 45 for the season and a school record 108 in her remarkable career and she also shines in the classroom where she is ranked #1 in her class.  Next year she’ll be attending Georgetown University but Central coach Kristee Paknis would like to see Carolan wear her Golden Eagle for a few more games.

Meanwhile the Indians Taylor Troutman saw her high school career end on a disappointing note a year after leading South to a championship season.  Troutman finishes this season with 24 goals and last month broke Carrie Kennington’s school career record; she’ll be playing at Auburn University next fall.

Toms River East senior Caleb Thompson has returned home following two months of hospitalization and rehabilitation in the wake of a swimming accident Labor Day weekend in which he suffered a severe spinal cord injury.  Thompson has made tremendous progress and will be continuing intense physical therapy three times a week on an outpatient basis as he relearns how to walk and do other things he likely took for granted before his accident.

A baseball player and “A” student Caleb still has a long way to go and it will be an expensive one with no health insurance.  For that reason a Pasta Dinner and Gift Auction Fundraiser will be held at High School East on Saturday, November 22nd from 6-10pm.  Admission is $25; advance tickets are being sold in the school’s main office.  For more information you can contact the school at (732) 505-5665.
