Congrats to my longtime broadcasting partner Matt Harmon who for the second straight year has been voted New Jersey Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.  Harmon is the play by play voice of our Shore Sports Network and is best known for his work on our high school football and basketball broadcasts as well as Monmouth University football and basketball games.

A communications teacher at Monmouth in addition to his busy work as a sportscaster, Matt has won the New Jersey award three times in his career and will be honored along with other state and national winners in Salisbury, North Carolina in early June.  Dan Patrick and Peter King are the national award winners and joining them at the 54th Annual NSSA Awards Weekend will be Hall of Fame inductees Dick Vitale and Mitch Albom.

I was at Monmouth last night where the men’s basketball team snapped a 7-game losing streak with a 65-60 victory over St. Francis, PA.  Not a big crowd as students are still away on winter break but there was plenty of energy in the building and on the court where Jesse Steele hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points for the Hawks.

The MAC is simply a great place for hoops and it would be nice to see shore fans embrace the Monmouth program.

A couple of veteran Shore Conference football coaches are stepping down at their respective schools.  Shane Fallon won 106 games in 15 seasons at Rumson-Fair Haven and guided his alma mater to their only state sectional championship in 2010.  He is leaving coaching to return to school and pursue a master’s degree.

Meanwhile Brian Kmak has announced that his 10th season at Keansburg was his last and he’ll now turn his attention to his family and coaching his own kids.  Kmak, who graduated from Keansburg, led the Titans to three playoff appearances, including a Group 1 championship game in 2007.

A sign of the times.  The Asbury Park Press is looking to sell its building headquarters in Neptune and will be looking to lease new space for its operation in the shore area.  The current location on Route 66 in Neptune was considered way ahead of its time when it opened in 1985 but with consolidation and technology it would appear there is a lot of wasted space.  Newspaper officials also announced they will not renew the lease on their Toms River bureau.
