Cover Tracks During Job Search [AUDIO]

A recent survey found 4 out of 5 Jersey employees will be looking for new job opportunities in 2012. If you’re planning to be among them, Carl Van Horn, the Director of the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University says “I would advise anybody to be very careful about who you provide access to that information… use your own personal PC on your own time…because many employers have the ability to check one’s company computers – that’s often part of the employment agreement…many employers would certainly be turned off if you’re spending time at work doing that, or you’re using company facilities – computers and copy machines and the like.”

He points out “sometimes it’s said that a little bit of paranoia is a good thing – so in other words, you ought to be careful about when you’re looking for a job, that you might be leaving your firm – who you tell that to…it’s probably best to do that without consulting a lot of people…because remember, employers may become dissatisfied with you if they find you are looking for another job – and use that perhaps as a reason to dismiss you.”

Van Horn adds it’s also important to be careful what you post on social media sites, and while most employers are not spending their time looking over their workers shoulders,” make the assumption that what you do – if you do it on company time on a company machine – computer – it can be discovered – so it’s better to not do that.”
