Did A Tsunami Hit the Jersey Shore on June 13?

A large wave that swept a group of divers nearly 100 yards in 30 seconds and knocked three people off of a jetty may have been a tsunami, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration.

The report includes an account from a diver named Brian Coen who was spearfishing near  Barnegat Inlet at the time.

Experts believe the tsunami conditions may have been caused by a collapse of a section of the continental shelf, sending wave energy towards the shore.

(Editor’s Note: Though news of the tsunami surfaced on Monday, June 24, the events referenced in the report happened on June 13. It is in no way connected to severe weather that moved through the area on the 24th.)
