Usually when people leave Atlantic City with disappointment on their face it’s because the cards, dice or roulette ball did not work in their favor.  However my 24-hour trip there ended late yesterday afternoon with a slightly different kind of disappointment, one that I got over pretty quickly.

Along with co-workers from Townsquare Media we were at Caesar’s for the 69th annual New Jersey Broadcasters Association Conference which is as much a social gathering as anything else.

While several of my colleagues left early I needed to gut it out until late in the day for personal reasons.  For the third time in four years the WOBM Christmas Classic was a finalist in the Best of the Best awards competition under the category of “Best Promotion.”

I would think that many if not most of you know the WOBM Classic is the 32-team high school basketball tournament that we run during the holiday season at the Pine Belt Arena and I won’t bore you with the details of why I and others thought it was most deserving of the award.  I had decided earlier that if the third time was not the charm then I would not enter again but I was truly optimistic that this would be by Susan Lucci moment in which years of bitter disappointment would come to an end.  If you don’t know who she is and why I mentioned this then just play along here.

My reason for optimism Thursday was based on the other two finalists which while outstanding and noteworthy were not quite as strong as the competition I faced in the past.  However that optimism quickly faded when other Townsquare stations won the first two awards categories, with mine being the third of four I doubted our company dominance would continue.

Unfortunately I was correct and the WOBM Christmas Classic lost out to a Billy Joel concert ticket/suite promotion with the only consolation being it went to someone who I used to work with and like very much.

I’m over my disappointment. Well not really.
