Dodging A Weather Bullet

Maybe for a change somebody up there likes us as most of the shore area dodged a major bullet when it comes to the weather over the weekend.

As a matter of fact with all the sunshine Saturday & Sunday much of the snow melted quite quickly and with rain and escalating temperatures in the forecast it figures to be pretty much gone in a couple of days.

There were some minor flooding issues on Friday and in Ortley Beach water from the ocean got as far as Route 35 because there was nothing to hold it back.

Speaking of rushing water if you have not seen the move The Impossible then try and catch it before it leaves theatres.  It’s true story about a family on Christmas vacation in Thailand in 2004 when the tsunami hits.  We saw it yesterday and it is really well done and captivating.  Naomi Watts & Ewan McGregor are billed as the leads but the three boys who play the children are the real stars.

On the eve of the State Team Wrestling Tournament one of New Jersey’s top grapplers has made his college plans known.  Toms River South’s B.J. Clagon committed to Rider University on Sunday and now can turn his attention to trying to win a second straight state title.

Clagon claimed the 138 pound title in Atlantic City last year and is the top-ranked wrestler in the state this winter at 145 pounds.

Before that he will try and help the Indians secure a South Jersey Group 3 title where they are the top seed and will need to get past nemesis Timber Creek this week.  A dozen teams hit the mat tonight in the opening round with the top teams all getting first round byes.

As expected the Lakewood boys and Red Bank Catholic girls have earned top seeds in the Shore Conference Basketball Tournament which begins tomorrow night.  The “B South” champion Piners are followed by Point Beach, Manasquan, Colts Neck and Toms River North in the field of 28.  On the Girls side the once-beaten Caseys land the #1 seed ahead of St. John Vianney, Point Boro, Middletown South and Rumson.

Despite being the one undefeated team at the shore Point Beach had to settle for the 7th seed because of their relatively easy schedule.

The tournament begins with first-round games tomorrow night although the top-seeds have byes into the round of 16 on Thursday.

Our Shore Sports Network will begin its live broadcast coverage of the tournament with the Boys Quarterfinals on Sunday at Brookdale.
