William Gaughan died shortly after being rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Investigators seek your help in the trackdown.

Ocean County investigators have joined South Toms River police in the search for the vehicle described as small, black or dark-colored, possibly now with damages to its front passenger side and windshield.

Investigators said that Gaughan was hit at about 5:54 PM on the eastbound side of Dover Road at Chamberlain Street, just a short distance from the busy 7-Eleven. The vehicle continued east and, they speculate, might have taken the onramp to the northbound Garden State Parkway. A witness called 911.

Gaughan was airlifted to Jersey Shore and died there at 7:30, according to information in the case.

If you know of the incident, vehicle, or driver, you’re urged to reach South Toms River Police Detective William Kosh, 732-239-0313; or Detective Craig Ally at the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, 732-814-4821.

It’s the second hit-and-run of a pedestrian in Ocean County in about as many weeks. The victim of a rundown on Lanes Mills Road is still clinging to life. A Bayville resident has been charged.
