The driver whose car ran down and injured a West Long Branch police officer directing traffic last November allegedly had heroin and marijuana in his system at the time, say Monmouth County authorities who filed charges Tuesday.

Michael C. Reyes, 21, of Oceanport, turned himself in and posted $25,000 bail to await proceedings on a charges led by second-degree charge of assault by auto in a school zone, according to the office of acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni.

Investigators also charged Reyes with driving under the influence of narcotics, reckless driving, and failure to comply with the direction of an officer.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Reyes would risk a prison term of five to 10 years.

Sergeant Brian Kramer was hospitalized for several days with head, face, shoulder and knee injuries after being hit on Parker Road while guiding traffic after the November 6 Shore Regional High School football game.

Authorities say that Kramer has been released from a rehabilitation center but remains on medical leave to continue extensive rehabilitation therapy.
