Producers announced her selection Friday.

DeGeneres hosted the show in 2007, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance.

"I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say -- the third time's the charm," DeGeneres said in a statement.

She tweeted out the news as well.

This year's host, Seth MacFarlane, drew mixed reviews for an edgy performance. He had already taken himself out of the running for a return engagement next year.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the show's producers, were "thrilled" to have their "longtime friend" as host of the show.  "There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are."

The Oscars will be held March 2.
