We reported to you yesterday that Greg Schiano, former Rutgers and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers head football coach, was instrumental in signing Eric LeGrand to a professional contract. LeGrand, paralyzed a year and a half ago during a Rutgers game, has been nothing short of inspirational, and I had to get my two cents in about this chapter of his amazing story.

I am a huge sports fan. I love the strategy, the sportsmanship, teamwork and the competition. It doesn’t matter what game it is. I love the game. The problem is, with each passing year, the games are less about those things and more about the almighty dollar. In many cases, it’s all about money. The stories of loyalty and inspiration are few and far between.

When I first heard about Eric LeGrand’s injury, I had the same terrible, sad feeling that we all did. Through Eric LeGrand’s amazing personality, his hard work, and the love of the people around him, he has turned this incident into a story of inspiration.

Now Greg Schiano has created some inspiration of his own. He’s a new head coach in the NFL. It would be so easy for him to be so caught up in his own world, but instead, he shows the loyalty, dedication and selflessness that is too often absent from professional sports. He gave a contract to a hard working guy who deserves it. And I’m inspired by it.

Thank you Greg Schiano and Eric LeGrand for making New Jersey proud. And thanks for showing us what sports, and life, should be all about.
