For the first time in 52 years former New Jersey Gov. Thomas Kean will skip the Republican National Convention when it opens in Cleveland on Monday, over differences on Donald Trump's immigration and economic policies.

In a conversation with NorthJersey.com, Kean said he has not made up his mind about who he will vote for in the November presidential election. The 81-year-old told columnist Mike Kelly that he would like to support his party's nominee but said “If it comes to the point where you disagree on too many issues, you can’t vote for him.”

As for Democrat Hillary Clinton, Kean said he believes she has a "good heart" but comes across as contrived and phony. He said Trump was a loose cannon who should “listen to people and stop tweeting at 11 o’clock at night."

Kean said would not close the door completely on Trump but said the presumptive nominee would have to tone down his message first.

Kean was New Jersey's 48th governor, serving between 1982-1990.

Most of the New Jersey Republican Congressional delegation is staying away from Cleveland next week according to NJ Advance Media, which reported that only Rep. Tom MacArthur from 3rd Congressional District will be at the convention.
