First Monday In October

Jumping all around on this first day of October.

One thing I have learned about the NFL is you can’t make assumptions based on one week because the exact opposite is likely to happen the next week.  With that said it’s time for the Jets to realize that Mark Sanchez can only be successful in a system that allows him to manage an offense with a lot of weapons around him and they simply don’t have them.  Plus let’s finally admit the Tebow thing is a joke.

So when the day started everyone was thrilled to have the regular officials back in the NFL but by late last night the welcome had worn off.  Truthfully the regular zebras missed a lot of calls and a really bad one almost resulted in a second straight defeat for the Packers.  It did seem like TV commentators and even the players and coaches gave the refs a bit of a break but that won’t last much longer.

Nice evening Friday as the St. Joseph’s Endowment Committee for Catholic Education honored Hall of Fame basketball coach Bob Hurley, Sr. during their annual Fall reception at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.  Hurley was gracious in accepting the award and throughout the evening as many of those in attendance had Jersey City connections to him.  I had the pleasure of introducing the longtime coach at St. Anthony High School, who has won more than a 1,000 games in 40 years but more importantly has helped some 200 players receive college scholarships.  His mission now is to promote catholic education and keep the doors to his financially-challenged school open.

If you were out and about in the Toms River and Brick over the weekend you might have run into Penn State students collecting money for the school’s annual THON event which benefits pediatric cancer research and more.

My daughter and several of her Kappa Delta sisters were at the New York Water Bagel Company on Fischer Boulevard, by the Four Seasons Diner and also the new ShopRite on Route 166 in Toms River and the Costco in Brick and I was amazed at how generous people were.  Most gladly donated to the cause and it was truly nice to see that even in these challenging times people want to help others.

As I’ve told you before THON is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world and last year’s event alone raised $10.6 million with some 15,000 student volunteers.
