As New Jersey's Groundhog Day winter storm winds down, temperatures will drop rapidly, causing dangerous icing conditions for this evening and overnight.

Monday's winter storm dropped upwards of 10.5 inches of snow on North Jersey, in addition to over 1 inch of rain across a wide swath of the state. Now, as colder air flows into New Jersey and as temperatures drop rapidly, all the puddles, water droplets, and slush is subject to a "flash freeze" overnight. This could lead to incredibly slick and hazardous road conditions.

Additionally, the colder temperatures are transitioning precipitation that had been rain back to sleet and/or snow. This new coating of frozen precipitation will not only directly exacerbate the icing situation, but it will also assist in the refreezing process of residual water.

Overall, it is expected to be a wintry and frigid night as temperatures fall into the 6° to 14° range with regular wind gusts over 30 mph. Add a glaze of ice to just about every surface, and you have the perfect excuse to just stay home and/or use extreme caution.
