Former youth football treasurer indicted for embezzlement

An ex-treasurer of the South Jersey Elite Invitational Youth Football League risks up to five years in prison, if he's convicted of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars in a two-year span.

Michael DiFlorio, 49, of Williamstown, was indicted Wednesday on a third-degree charge of theft by deception, according to the office of New Jersey Attorney Genral Christopher S. Porrino.

Investigators allege that DiFlorio pocketged $56,777 between July 2014 and June 2016, using a debit card linked to the league's account that he obtained without authorization.

Authorities contend that DiFlorio used the debit card for more than $10,000 in cash withdrawals and personal purchases, wrote checks totalling over $32,000 to himself and to a friend, and took about $14,000 cash from the revenues of the league's 2015 championship game.

If convicted, DiFlorio would face a minimum of three years in prison, up to five, and a fine as high as $15,000.

The case has been assigned to Gloucester County, where DiFlorio is ordered to appear for arraignment.

Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
