Free Beach Access For Storm Aid, NJ Lawmaker Proposes

One proposal creating some buzz after Hurricane Sandy would require any Jersey Shore town that accepts government rebuilding aid to provide free public access to beaches and restrooms.

Senator Michael Doherty
Senator Michael Doherty. (Tim Larsen, Governor’s Office)

Republican Sen. Michael Doherty, who represents Warren, Hunterdon and Somerset counties, says the proposal will ensure that all taxpayers enjoy the fruits of public funds spent to restore shore communities damaged by the superstorm.

Doherty says it’s obvious that the shoreline must be rebuilt and that the impacted communities will need help. But, he says, public money must be spent for benefit of all citizens.

New Jersey is one of the few states that let towns control the price of beach access.

Doherty says beach fees are an unfair barrier that keeps some citizens from enjoying a resource they pay to maintain.
