The Jackson Little League team has had a couple of days to get acclimated to life in Bristol, Connecticut and today they begin play in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament.

The recently-crowned New Jersey state champs face Delmar, Maryland at 1 p.m. at Breen Field.  The Maryland state champions beat D.C. 10-5 in one of two games on Monday…in the other New York topped Delaware.  If Jackson can win today than they are off until Thursday while a loss sends them back into action tomorrow.  Today’s game is available on ESPN3, which is an online streaming service.

Some of you might remember Jeff Musselman as a three-sport standout at Central Regional High School, class of 1981.  Some might remember him as a major league pitcher, who spent five seasons with the Blue Jays and Mets before a near-fatal heart attack ended his career.  Some might know that he’s a right-hand man to noted sports agent Scott Boras, using his Harvard degree to help players maximize their contract potential.

What the 52-year old might be best known for today is being the father of a standout water polo player. Maddie Musselman was a big part of the U.S. Women’s team which last Friday beat the Netherlands 5-4 in the gold medal game of the world championships in Russia.

The 17-year old scored the second U.S. goal in the game and is the youngest player on a squad made up mainly of college grads or current college players.  Musselman was attending Corona del Mar High School (Newport Beach, CA) before de-enrolling in the spring to train full time with the women’s national team.

She has been taking classes at a private online school and will likely continue to do so through what would be her senior year so she can continue to focus on next summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.  Maddie, who also scored a goal in the semifinals, is the granddaughter of former Toms River North Athletic Director Don Musselman.

You just know that for most of us the summer is really winding down and there’s only so many perfect beach days left.  Monday was almost one of them. The beach was a 10 but red flags were up for rough ocean water which was also very dirty for maybe the first time this summer.  That’s what happens when you have strong east winds for a few days.  However we enjoyed a great day on the beach and then a burger afterwards at Bum’s Backyard in South Seaside Park. Not a bad Monday.
