I believe the saying goes "don't drink a wine before it's time."  Well the the same goes for fruit.

Do you know how to pick a cantaloupe? If you're buying bananas it's visually obvious what's ripe and what's not but with melons it's a little tricky. Fruit is too expensive not to enjoy it to it's fullest. So, I'm going to tell you how to pick a cantaloupe and when it's ready to eat.

1. Look at the bin or shelf where the cantaloupe is stored in. If there are flies or other insects around or if juice is leaking and covering the other ones it's a good idea to shop elsewhere for them.

2. Picking: Look for one that is light tan with green lines across it. Don't go for the ones that have dents or dark patches on them.

3. Feel: Pick it up, it should be heavy for it's size and firm but not rock hard. That's good if you are planning to eat it a week away.

4. Sniff: The spot where the stem was, you should smell an aroma similar to a freshly sliced cantaloup, if you can't smell anything it's under ripe if it unpleasing put it back.

5. Listen: Shake the cantaloupe next to your ear. If you can hear the seeds rattling it's ready to eat.

And that's all there is to picking the right melon, hope I helped you out!
