The Brick Township Chamber of Commerce is taking a unique approach with this year’s installation of their officers and Board of Directors on Thursday, January 23 at the Crystal Point Yacht Club.

Billed as “Down the Shore” the event will celebrate what makes the Jersey Shore a special place and despite being the middle of winter the theme is likely to make attendees think and feel summer.  There will be boardwalk games and even boardwalk food so forget the formal dress. Shore casual attire will do just fine.

The Brick Chamber will also use the evening to honor their Distinguished Jersey Shore Champions, all of whom have been instrumental in the ongoing relief effort from Superstorm Sandy.  I will have the pleasure of helping make the presentations to the architectural firm of Barlo & Associates, the Visitation Relief Center and its director Christie Winters and our good friends at Hometown Heroes.

All have answered the call and continue to help so many in the area recover and try to get back to normal.  The need remains great in Brick Township where some 1700 people are still not back in their homes nearly 15 months after the storm.   The January 23rd event is from 6-9pm and tickets are available through the chamber office at (732) 477-4949.  Should be a great time celebrating the shore and the people who make it a better place to live and work.

For what it’s worth my title is Director of the Shore Sports Network which is where all of our sports programming falls under including high school football and basketball, Monmouth University sports, Lakewood BlueClaws baseball and shoreportsnetwork.com.  For that reason I am especially proud to announce that our own Matt Harmon and Scott Stump will be honored by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association this June.

Harmon, the play-by-play voice of our high school and college sports broadcasts and Tom Williams of Prime Events tied for the New Jersey Sportscaster of the Year Award.  It’s the fourth such honor for Matt and the third year in-a-row he has been selected by his peers.  Meanwhile Stump, who is highly-regarded for his work on our website and in the bi-weekly publication we produce, will share the New Jersey Sportswriter of the Year Award with Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

It’s the first win for Scott who began his career with the Asbury Park Press.  Harmon and Stump will be saluted during the 55th Annual NSSA Awards program June 7-9 in Salisbury, North Carolina along with national winners Mike “Doc” Emerick and Peter King and hew Hall of Famers Marv Albert and Rick Reilly.  Well done guys!
