Captain Steven Laskiewicz, in a Facebook entry, concealed the arrestee's identity, citing confidentiality of victims and others involved in ancillary incidents. He noted that the arrestee was already the subject wanted on an assault charge.

Officers arriving at the Quick Chek on Leesville Road in the mid-morning of November 4 said they found him in a red Ford pickup, acting erratically.

He was arrested on the strength of the warrant, and claimed to be trying to fix the truck, in which officers said they found marijuana and a glass pipe commonly used for smoking the substance. They were told that he threatened to injure a store worker.

While being booked, behaving abnormally, he told police that he had swallowed cocaine, heroin and prescription medicines, and needed hospitalization, police said, but he allegedly became combative with Quality First Aid staffers and refused treatment.

Officers minding the holding cell then found him taking off his pants, and tying the legs around a bed frame. They stopped him from trying to injure himself that way, but then he began choking himself, police said.

In the ensuing struggle, he said that he was trying to hurt himself, police said. A short while later, during hospital treatment and evaluations, he allegedly spat in the direction of medical staffers, and threatened to kill an officer's family. Staffers managed to get a blood sample.

Along with the warrant, police filed charges of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, operating a motor vehcile while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, having an expired registration, harassment, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, and terroristic threats. Bail was set at a full $15,000.

Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
