In Ocean County, a 12-year-old boy digging a hole at the 17th Street Beach in Surf City was buried when sand suddenly caved in around him shortly before 2 p.m.. Lifeguards and bystanders pulled him out and performed CPR, according to officials.

The child was breathing when he was helicoptered to the hospital. The boy was reported in stable condition.

The accident happened just days after officials in nearby Harvey Cedars warned beach goers that digging deep holes is illegal and dangerous.

In Monmouth County, an 18-year-old man swimming with another person at an unguarded beach off Sea Bright got caught in strong rip currents. Bystanders alerted lifeguards. It took them 20 minutes to find the man.

Sea Bright Police Chief John Sorrentino told the Asbury Park Press Kevin Searfoss of Rockaway was unconscious when he was pulled from the surf. Lifeguards performed CPR.

Searfoss was in critical condition, according to Sorrentino.
