Legislation Targets Telemarketers [AUDIO]

They call him all the time and refuse to say who they are and what they want. Now Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick is co-sponsoring legislation that would have telemarketers facing huge fines if they don't give information call recipients request from them.

"If they're making phone calls, harassing people and not telling the people who they are, how can you be an honest businessman and not tell the consumer who you are?" asked Bramnick (R-Westfield). "It's really annoying because they keep asking questions, but they won't give you any answers to your questions. It's just not right."

The proposed bill states that, upon request, telemarketers must give their name, mailing address and the name of the person on whose behalf they're calling. If prosecutors can verify a complaint and trace the call back to the company, a telemarketer who refuses to give the information could be fined as much as $1,000.

Anyone who won't give you their information, to me, is attempting to perpetrate something," Bramnick said. "I want to know who is calling me, but when I try to find out they hang up."

The bipartisan measure is co-sponsored by Bramnick and Assemblyman Paul Moriarty (D-Turnersville).
