Linsanity Can’t Take The Heat – Hometown View

A little of this and a little of that heading into the final weekend of February, a month that came in like a lamb and is going out in the same fashion.

It was a rough night for the NBA’s fastest-ever superstar as Jeremy Lin looked like a deer in headlights against the Heat in Miami. Lin, in by far the worst outing of his brief Knicks tenure, missed 10 of 11 shots, turned the ball over 8 times and finished with just 8 points and 3 assists. Miami heads into the All-Star break riding an 8-game winning streak with all of those victories coming by 12 points or more.

While it was not a “Lintastic” night for the Harvard graduate clearly “Linsanity” is still in full swing. As a matter of fact there are 7 different patent applications on file for the phrase “Linsanity” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Among them is one filed by an attorney representing Lin and the applications cover everything from sunglasses to action figures. The NBA said that Lin’s #17 jersey has been the top seller this month and they are planning on introducing more Lin-related items like stuffed animals and bobbleheads.

RECRUITING VIOLATIONS IN NORTH BERGEN?

Vince Ascolese
Vince Ascolese (North Bergen High School)

The controversies committee of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association is going to investigate charges of recruiting by recently-retired North Bergen High School football coach Vince Ascolese. The story first came to light last month as part of a special report by the Star Ledger which said that Ascolese lured two players to the school partly by offering to rent them apartments in a home he owns right next to his own. The story got messy when the longtime and successful coach then tried to evict the pair over not paying rent…right after North Bergen won a sectional title in December.

If indeed it’s determined by the NJSIAA that the players were recruited the school might have to forfeit its championship. The NJSIAA has been busy over the last couple of years fighting its on battles but illegal recruiting is a subject that should be dealt with instead of ignored which it usually is.

The Shore Sports Network will broadcast tonight’s championship games of the Shore Conference Basketball Tournament at Monmouth University. Manasquan meets St. Rose in the Girls Final at 6pm followed by the Boys battle between Colts Neck and Neptune. Matt Harmon and I will call all the action on 1160 & 1310AM and the games will be streamed at shoresportsnetwork.com
