Little Drama In Happy Valley – Hometown View

So it turned out there was little drama in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania Tuesday because accused child sex abuser Jerry Sandusky waived his preliminary hearing and was in and out of the courtroom in a matter of minutes.

Those waiting to hear what some of his accusers had to say left disappointed as the case now moves toward a trial starting next month unless a plea agreement is reached which Sandusky’s lawyer Joe Amendola said is not going to happen.

After yesterday’s surprising move Amendola did speak to a large press contingent that had gathered in the county seat of Centre County and as he’s done in the past continued to make people scratch their heads over some of his actions. At one point the 63-year old State College attorney when commenting on a possible scenario in the case said if you believe that “I suggest you dial 1-800-REALITY.” That might seem harmless but later the folks at the website Deadspin did just that…called the phone number. In what is just another bizarre twist to this case it turns out that was the phone number for a gay phone sex line. Really, you can’t make this stuff up.

Next up is a court date unless Amendola and Sandusky reverse their stance and accept a plea agreement which most legal experts say would probably land the 67-year old disgraced football coach a prison sentence of anywhere between 10-20 years. For now Sandusky is free on $250,000 bail and probably won’t be spending too much time out of his house.

Where have all the Christmas cards gone? Remember when your mailbox used to be filled with cards on a daily bases during the weeks leading up to the holiday? Well not any longer as more and more have given up the tradition due to a combination of factors including the cost of cards and postage, email greetings and more than anything else…time pressure. When our children were small we always did a theme picture of them which became the Christmas card but now I’ll admit we have joined the masses who just can’t be bothered. I remember when we used to receive cards at the radio station in the dozens and hang them up in the office. Sadly those days are gone as is my time for this morning.
