Man killed when car hits salt truck in spring snow on Route 55
A man died early Monday morning has his Audi rear-ended a salt-truck on Route 55 in Vineland during the overnight snow.
State Police said the crash occurred around 1:50 a.m. when Michael Bennett, 32, of Sea Isle City, struck the struck, which was traveling at 25 mph and spreading salt. The roadway was wet, police said.
Authorities are continuing to investigate why the Audi hit the truck. Bennett died at the scene, and the driver of the salter was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.
As of 6:30 a.m., the roadway was completely open.
Another overnight accident also took out a traffic signal on Route 35 at Harding Avenue in Perth Amboy, according to New Jersey Fast Traffic.
Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said the snow "had a very hard time sticking. The exception may be in South Jersey, where a band of very heavy snow just barely clipped the coast near Atlantic City early this morning."
He expected the snow to continue through 8 a.m. with some light accumulation and just wet roads.
As a precaution, the speed on the entire length of the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike was reduced to 45 mph.
No school districts reported cancellations or delayed openings to New Jersey 101.5's NJ Stormwatch on Monday morning. NJ Transit reported no storm-related issues and there were no flight delays at Newark Liberty International Airport.
No power outages were reported on the outage maps for JCP&L, PSE&G or Atlantic City Electric.
