TOMS RIVER — Police shot nine rounds at a man when he pointed a black object — which turned out to be a remote control — in their direction and refused an order to put his hands up Sunday, authorities say.

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said police found the man after getting calls from residents of Sand Creek Lane in the Silverton section of Toms River around 6:45 p.m. The residents had reported a "suspicious male armed with a gun," Coronato said.

When police arrived, the man had his right hand behind his back and began walking toward the officers, according to Coronato. After disobeying the officers' repeated, loud orders to show his hands and put them in the air, Coronato said, the man quickly pulled his hand out from behind his back and pointed a black object at the officers.

Coronato said the officers fired nine rounds at the man, striking him twice. He said officers immediately gave the man first aid before an ambulance arrived. Coronato said on Tuesday afternoon the man was listed in critical but stable condition. He is expected to survive.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed by Coronato, was staying at an area motel, he said. Coronato said the man intentionally took the TV remote control from the room before calling 911 himself to summon police, according to Coronato.

Coronato asked that anyone with information about the incident or anyone involved to call 732-929-2027.
