The non-profit AARP Foundation Tax Aide in Shrewsbury offers free filing help for low- and moderate-wage earners, with special attention to those age 60 and up. Right now, the group is enlisting volunteers for the task.

Local coordinator Adam Gerner notes that filing assistance helps ensure that families with limited incomes and tight budgets hang onto discretionary dollars for everyday essentials, such as food and housing.

Volunteers are especially needed in Middletown, Keyport, Matawan and Shrewsbury, Gerner said. The Freehold office seeks volunteers who are fluent in Spanish to fill roles either as tax form preparers or translators.

The service operates in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). If you're interested in joining the team, visit the AARP Foundation Tax Aide site here.
