Random notes and thoughts on the first weekday under Daylight Savings Time in which sunset is not until 6:58 so the days are clearly getting longer.

By the way for those of you who seem to remember that Daylight Savings Time used to start later in the year you are correct.  In 1966 it lasted from the last Sunday of April until the last Sunday of October but President Reagan moved it to the first Sunday of April in 1986 and in 2005 President Bush extended DST from the second Sunday of March until the first Sunday of November.

Kudos to all those involved when it came to the traffic flow in and out of Seaside Heights for Saturday’s Ocean County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.  As promised there were two lanes in and two lanes out and police everywhere to direct and move traffic in an orderly fashion.

Total parade attendance probably suffered somewhat from fears over a traffic nightmare because of the ongoing road construction but the presence of sunshine and warm temperatures made for a great day and a badly-needed shot in the arm for some local businesses.

For the first time since 1970 the Shore Conference did not have a wrestler in the finals of the NJSIAA Championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City but a total of 18 did earn medals over the long grappling weekend.  Leading that contingent were 120 pound Jackson Liberty junior Mike Russo and Wall 160 pound sophomore Brett Donner, who each finished third and gave notice they’ll be title contenders in 2015.

Point Pleasant Beach will look to make it back-to-back Central Jersey Group 1 Boys Basketball championships tonight when they host Shore Regional at 6pm.  A Garnett Gulls victory would send them into the group semifinals on Wednesday at the Pine Belt Arena against the winner of tonight’s South Jersey Group 1 final between top-seed Schalick and Pittman.

The NFL’s free agency signing period begins tomorrow afternoon and one player expected to garner a lot of attention is tight end Garrett Graham, a former Brick Memorial standout.  The 27-year old has spent all four of his pro seasons with the Houston Texans and is coming off his best season which makes the timing work in his favor.  While Houston would like to keep him Graham is coveted by several teams, including the Green Bay Packers.
