NEWARK – Hundreds of local school board members across New Jersey could lose their posts or even go to jail, after missing an end-of-year requirement to complete a criminal background check. The (Newark) Star-Ledger reports the checks are required under a new law. State education officials may release the names of affected board members by the end of the week.

STAFFORD - Stafford Police arrest a township resident for feeding feral cats. Reports say 51-year-old Mark Rist was taken into custody last week after a two-month investigation. Police received regular complaints about someone dumping large amounts of cat food at the end of Cape May Avenue. He’s charged with littering and being a public nuisance under the health code.

ATLANTIC CITY - A Newark man heads to prison for 12 years under the No Early Release Act for a fatally stabbing a bar employee and seriously injuring another in Atlantic City in 2009. The sentence follows a guilty plea by Luis Martinez to first-degree aggravated manslaughter and aggravated assault charges. The Atlantic County Prosecutors Office say Richard Rivera and Robert Kutch were attempting to break up a fight inside the Irish Pub when the incidents occured. Rivera did not survive.
