Marine Cpl. Nicholas Ott was killed in action in Afghanistan in August of 2011at the age of 23.  Nick was a 3-sport athlete at Manchester Township High School, earning letters in football, wrestling and track before graduating in 2006.  Shortly after he died a scholarship fund was established in his name through the Educational Foundation and this past spring two graduating seniors received $1000 each as recipients of the first Cpl. Nicholas Ott Memorial Scholarship.

Saturday’s fundraiser is titled “Nick’s sMile of Quarters” with organizers hoping to cover the track four times with quarters which would total a miles worth of quarters.  Groups and individuals have been working on the fundraiser for months and the final effort will begin at 9am …the event will also include food, games, gift raffles and more.   For information you can visit mtef4kids.org and of course you can stop by Saturday morning, bring your quarters and help join the effort.

The Barbara “Foof” Forfar Nursing Scholarship Fund has awarded six $500 scholarships to members of the Ocean Medical Center staff with the presentations made yesterday at the hospital in Brick.  This was the second straight year in which scholarships were awarded to employees of Ocean Medical Center and the recipients are Sharon Lubeck and  Samantha Bernard of Brick, Juana Maria Buergo (Freehold), Andrea Clauser(Point Pleasant), Jodi Imperato(Howell) and Nicole Marie Ortiz(Toms River).    The scholarship fund was established to honor the memory of longtime Point Pleasant resident Barbara Forfar, who spent 44 years in the nursing profession.  The scholarships will help nurses and nursing students continue their formal education.  Information is available at www.forfarscholarship.org

On an unrelated note, tonight’s Barnabas Health High School Football Show will feature Southern Regional coach Chuck Donohue and senior lineman Ryan Boyle and Monsignor Donovan coach Dan Duddy and his University of Virginia recruit Brad Henson.  The show is broadcast live from Baker’s Water Street Grill and heard on 105.7FM beginning at 7pm.
