As our mostly-rainy May heads for the door, it leaves handsome water supplies behind. New Jersey American Water isn't waiting for a drought to hit, asking Monmouth County customers, now, to set up voluntary conservation measures.

The company recommends lawn watering on odd or even days, corresponding to your house number, between 6 and 9 AM and 5 and 8 PM.

Recommendations do not apply to new sod, newly-seeded lawns that need water daily, private well owners, athletic fields, or businesses with outdoor watering purposes, such as nurseries, farm stands, power washers, plumbers and car washes.

The policy remains voluntary, but restrictions would likely tighten if demand begins to surge or supplies start to wane.
